If you’ve written a children’s book, you know it’s not easy. Sure, there are fewer words than novels, but that only puts more pressure on every word. Since you have so little space, it’s important to tighten your children’s book. Here are some tips to do just that.

Step 1: Find Your Story

Writers have a lot to say, and you’re a writer, so . . .

In the early drafts of your story, that’s fine. Get it out there—all of it. Just remember to go back and cut some of it out. Otherwise, you’ll wind up with hundreds of extra words that slow down readers. Slow down readers, and they may stop reading altogether.

Not good!

In order to tighten your children’s book manuscript, you need to have a clear understanding of the purpose of your story. What’s at the heart of your tale?

Once you figure that out, remove everything that doesn’t point toward your main point. You might like how a sentence or phrase sounds or it may be special to you for sentimental reasons, but a good children’s book doesn’t have room for unnecessary words or sentiment that doesn’t propel the story forward.

So, be ruthless. Find every excess word and bid it adieu. Your readers will thank you.

Step 2: Choose Better Words to Tighten Your Children’s Book

The English language is full of great words. Use them!

When attempting to tighten your children’s book, one right word can replace three wrong words. The right word gets to the heart of your message, while wrong words beat around the bush and leave readers confused.

You don’t want to beat around the bush, and you don’t want confused readers. So, cut out the vague words and go with clear, concise ones.

Example: Instead of writing “Barley ran really fast,” write “Barley sprinted” or “Barley dashed.” It sounds better and takes up less space—win, win!

Step 3: Hire a Pro to Tighten Your Children’s Book

Sometimes, it’s hard to see what words could be removed or changed. Especially if you spent a lot of time agonizing over your story and nurturing it. That’s why it’s important to get a second pair of eyes on your manuscript.

A professional editor can tighten your children’s book manuscript and make it the best it can be.
